Canon Rebel T7 no clean hdmi out

Canon Rebel T7   also known as the 2000d or the 1500d

If you are thinking about purchasing the "Canon Rebel T7" for live streaming with an hdmi capture card ...

Please know despite what you have read on the internet... the "Canon Rebel T7" will not work with hdmi and a capture card.

Unfortunately I've seen people online disappointed when they get the camera home, only to find it won't work for them.  (I tested this myself before writing this blog post)

The "Canon Rebel T7"  does not have a "clean hdmi out".

In other words... The Canon Rebel T7  in hdmi, the focus rectangle does not go away in any camera setting or lens setting, manual focus or, auto focus.

In auto face focusing mode, the rectangle reappears and will track your face... which makes it impossible to stream with a capture card.

Unfortunately, there have been some confusion in the model number with the little "i" added in the "Canon Rebel T7i" which "DOES have a clean hdmi out" (in lens manual focus mode). I use this camera for all of my live streams with no problems using OBS open broadcaster software along with an hdmi "Elgato Camlink".

The Canon T7 is a great camera, and as far as image quality goes.. the specs are just a fraction difference between the Canon Rebel T7i. (not noticable) I love this little Rebel T7 dslr camera for still shots. In manual mode, it does everything my older pro dslr did. Just in a smaller package. The 24 megapixels blew me away in low light. I can do a custom white balance too, which is a plus. Being old school.... I prefer manual mode.... but the auto settings are great for someone just getting started in photography!  At this point I have not tested the video mode.

The Canon Rebel T7 and T7i - have wifi that can connect to a smartphone with an app.

Unlike the Canon T7i .... the T7 will not transfer wirelessly to your computer. You will need to use a usb cable to your camera,  and "you must have the Canon Utility software installed in your computer" for the image transfer to take place.

If you want to shoot in raw mode, download the Canon Photo Professional editing software from their website. Only the raw files will have full feature editing. It is a small learning curve but I'm very happy with what it can do for my black and white conversions.

If you are purchasing a reasonably priced Canon dslr for live streaming via hdmi, go with the Canon Rebel T7i model, not the T7.  Be sure your computer has usb 3.0 also if you use a usb extension cable, make sure it is usb 3.0, otherwise your video will be choppy.

As people have found out... everything you read on the internet is not correct.

If you are in doubt about any camera working with a clean hdmi out (no focus aid showing) using an hdmi capture card,  refer to the official Elgato Camlink data page.  https://www.elgato.com/en/gaming/cam-link/camera-check  yes the "i" in the Canon model number does make a difference!

If you already purchased  the Canon T7 for live streaming, all is not lost.

You will need to download the Canon Utility software
connect camera via a usb cable.
Go to live view mode.
In OBS studio, use a windows capture to capture the video feed from the canon utility software.
Here's someone's youtube video on how to do this.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPzZ6J48alM

I hope this helps someone :)
